Zijin Media Forum Held in Nanjing

The first Jiangsu Development Summit, theme on “Meet in Jiangsu and Create Dream Together”, opened on May 20 in Nanjing. The summit is organized by Jiangsu government and provincial Party committee, intended to invite celebrities and elites from different fields, who are Jiangsu natives or working in Jiangsu for years, to discuss about Jiangsu’s development and future. 


“Jiangsu natives in home and abroad are the most precious and reliable resources for the development of Jiangsu province”, said Liqiang, secretary of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee. As a resource-intensive province and a prosperous place for innovation, Jiangsu created many development miracles before. The summit, inviting Jiangsu natives to come back to their hometown, aims to unite and cohere more powers from different fields for the better development in Jiangsu’s transformation period.

Jiangsu Development Summit consists of 9 theme forums, among which Zijin Media Forum was held in Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation. Organized by Propaganda Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and co-organized by Zijin Media Think Tank (ZMT) and School of Journalism & Communication of Nanjing University, Zijin Media Forum focused on journalism communication and innovation. Journalism elites from around the world and famous scholars in the field of journalism and communication met together to share their insights and discuss on communication and innovation in the era of media convergence and internationalization, promoting the innovation and development of Jiangsu journalism and communication industry.

Hosted by Zhouqi, vice minister of Propaganda Department of Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, Zijin Media Forum was formed by keynote speeches and roundtable dialogues. Elites and experts from all fields expressed their appreciation for coming back home and proposed suggestions on media convergence and innovation from different perspectives.

Liu Zhengrong, vice president and secretary-general of Xinhua News Agency, gave his suggestions on the development of media convergence in terms of content creation, technology innovation, talents cultivation and system innovation.

“We can develop a social network of Jiangsu media, using our collective expertise and resources to plan and package targeted programs that not only promote Jiangsu’s development but are well-received in home and abroad”, proposed Zhang Guoliang, chairman of Hong Kong Federation of Journalism.

“To be a good story teller is the most attractive way to present China and Jiangsu province”, suggested Yang Lan, president of Sun Media Group. “Apart from telling the story of China, we should introduce and tell the story of the world.”

The first roundtable “communication and innovation in the era of media convergence” was hosted by Prof. Zhou Xiaohong, chairman of ZMT and dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences of Nanjing University. Presented guests included renowned scholars and media elites.

“New media does not mean traditional media and journalists are not indispensable. On the contrary, a lot of misleading information and vague facts need to be clarify by reliable communication agencies and professional journalists,” claimed Prof. Tang Xujun, director of Institute of Journalism and Communication of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Bao Hongjun, editor-in-chief of Zhejiang Daily Press Group, proposed that in the era of media convergence and new media, traditional media should take renewed emphasis on content quality. This view was shared by Prof. Du Junfei, executive dean of the School of Journalism & Communication of Nanjing University. He believed that it’s no longer at a stalemate between new media and traditional media, but the counter-offensive stage of traditional media.

In the roundtable “communication and innovation in the era of internationalization”, Prof. Bu Yu, chairman of Jiangsu Broadcasting Corporation and dean of the School of Journalism & Communication of Nanjing University, presented that internationalization of traditional media should not only focus on content and planning, but also on talents resources.
